I want to welcome you on behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. As a major or minor in the department you will further your study of the language of your choice, along with the literatures and cultures of those peoples who speak it. As proud recipients of the Departmental Teaching Excellence Award (one of two departments so recognized by Ohio State in the spring of 2004), we strive to provide you with the best academic and professional attention to make this intellectual trip fulfilling. Skilled and dedicated advisors, together with faculty mentors, will help you design and realize the program of your choice. Our faculty members have prepared a wide range of challenging courses to introduce you to literary, cultural, and linguistic studies in Spanish and Portuguese. These programs will open the horizons of the Hispanic experience to you, prepare you to acquire first-hand knowledge in one of our study abroad programs, and provide you with significant skills and knowledge for your future careers. We aspire to lead you to a satisfying level of expertise in language and subject matter and to empower you to engage in rewarding research projects of your choice guided by committed faculty members. In addition, the Spanish and Portuguese Clubs, and our other cultural activities (such as lectures, film series, and meetings) should become focal points for meaningful contacts with people with similar interests in a congenial atmosphere.
